A fatbike is designed for cycling on terrains with low grip, such as sand, snow, mud, and rocky trails.
What sets a fatbike apart from regular mountain bikes are its extremely wide tires, which are inflated at low pressure to create a larger contact surface with the ground. This allows fatbikes to ride more easily over soft and loose surfaces without sinking or getting stuck.
Fatbikes became highly sought after when Covid hit the Alps and ski lifts were shut down. With skiing no longer an option, ski slopes were taken over by fatbikes, and rental shops quickly ran out of stock.
